The Slow Summer Isn't a Problem. It's an Invitation.

Every summer, right around the middle of July, my inbox fills up with some version of the same message: "It's been really quiet. Should I be worried?"

No. You should be paying attention — but you shouldn't be worried.

Slow summers happen to almost every small business. Your customers are at the lake. They're driving kids to swim lessons. They're spending money on plane tickets instead of on you. The phone isn't ringing because life got in the way, not because you did something wrong.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: a slow season is the only time of year you get to work on your business instead of just in it. So let's use it.

Fix the things you keep apologizing for

You know what they are. The contact form that goes to an email you stopped checking. The pricing page that's been "under construction" since March. The voicemail greeting with your old hours on it.

Make a list of every small, embarrassing thing you'd hate for a new customer to find. Then knock out one per day. In two weeks you'll have a business that finally matches how good you actually are.

Call the customers who already love you

Not a campaign. Not a blast. An actual conversation.

Pick ten past customers and reach out — a phone call, a real email, a handwritten note. Ask how they're doing. Ask what they wish you offered. Don't pitch anything.

I've watched this one habit fill more Septembers than any ad ever did. People buy from businesses that remember them.

Build the thing you never have time to build

Every business owner has a someday project. The email list. The FAQ page. The photos of your actual work instead of the stock images. The referral program you've described out loud six times but never wrote down.

Pick one. Just one. Summer is the only stretch of the year with enough quiet in it to finish something.

Get your fall ready now

Whatever your busy season is — back-to-school, the holidays, tax time, harvest — it's closer than it feels. Write the emails now. Sketch the offers now. Book the photographer now.

Future you, buried in orders in October, will be so grateful.

And take the actual break

This is the part I have to say twice, because business owners are terrible at it.

Rest is not lost productivity. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and a burned-out owner makes worse decisions than a rested one every single time. Close early on a Friday. Take the long weekend. Go to the lake yourself.

The work will be there Monday.

A little something extra

Here's the lagniappe: the slow season is where the next busy season gets built.

The businesses that come roaring back in September aren't the ones that panicked in July and slashed their prices. They're the ones that used the quiet to tighten up, reconnect, and get ready.

So no — quiet isn't the same as failing. Sometimes it's just the deep breath before the run.

Need a second set of eyes on your fall plan? That's exactly what we do at Excellis. Reach out and let's talk about what your busy season could look like this year.
